Excellent graphic design inspiration from an ongoing design competition (The Dollar ReDe$ign Project) to redesign the US Dollar. These entries by Michael Tyznik caught our eye for the simplicity and modern nature of their design. In the designer’s own words:
“Here are the main ideas in this design: Money and the color green are inextricably intertwined in American culture. I think it’d be a mistake to remove green as the primary color. Instead, each bill has a brightly-colored holographic strip embedded into it which contains the denomination. The width of this strip also changes with the denomination. This introduces an element which makes each bill extremely easy to identify. There is also braille denoting the bills’ denomination on the holographic strip”.
[EDIT] As far as we know there are no actual plans to redesign the actual dollar, it seems a few people missed the fact that this isn’t actually a proposal for an all new US Dollar, but really just a speculative concept!

Which number president is Franklin?
Awesome designs. Maybe not 100% appealing, but a very good work.
An excellent point regarding the typography. My thoughts were relating to the right justification, but come to think of it it would also be beneficial to have a immediately recogniseable yet legible (and perhaps unique) typeface used just for currency.
I was wondering when someone would mention Jebediah Springfield haha.
Do not like the fonts used. They don’t look distinguished in the slightest.
Can we move away from the green? Perhaps reverse the color scheme. Primary color with a strip of green?

Hmm, I like the quotes and no “In God We Trust” bull, but I think the design is just a bit too simple and modern for my taste
I really like the use of Washington DC photos in the background! I think the color strips are a little modern but I like the idea of putting the constitution on the back and the braille!

It feels European, not American.
others have mentioned it, and for those who have never seen a euro…these designs are clearly influenced by the various designs on paper euros. i say this for the people that commented on the cut-up numbers, and the color strips.
Ulysses Grant – “EEighteenth President” typo…
Otherwise… love the idea, and like the execution.
FYI: It’s says “Eeighteenth President” under Ulysses S. Grant ($200). I take it that double “e” is merely a typo?

I think your design is fantastic, but can we push to print on recycled paper and with eco-friendly inks? It kinda makes my skin crawl to imagine the government printing all new money just for the sake of a new design…it seems anti-environment. What would they do with all the old printed money? I am a designer and I believe in making beautiful things, but do we really need to print new money? Being an eco-friendly activist, I wish you would promote the idea that we used recycled products and earth friendly inks. If not, this is just another waste of our natural resources just to “design” our own vanity.
The cut-up numbers join up when you hold the bill up to the light. Counterfeiters sometimes have trouble making the forward and reverse sides of the bill line up correctly – it’s a simple check.
Here in Oz, we use plastic bills – more hygenic, better wearing, and a variety of other advantages.
That’s a great idea.
Didn’t realise Australia had plastic bills, that’s really quite cool.
@MissMorgan; FYI the current US paper bill’s lifespan is roughly a year or two, so it’s being continually printed/replaced all the time. The Treasury would simply cease printing the old format and start printing replacement bills with the new design (as happened with the $5 bill). US currency is actually a cotton fabric rather than conventional paper, in part because it makes it harder for forgers to copy.
Neat look, but IMO the creepy weird-ass Masonic crap on our money is pretty awesome.
You need some freaky subliminal background icons of eyeballs, owls, Satan, etc. to make these more palatable to our beloved American fringe.
So what’s the countdown until the Illuminati shanghai you for daring to delete their influence?
So, we’re skipping the single and moving right into the fin? Grant gets bumped from the doublesaw, but given a new denomination as compensation?
Kidding aside, I love the designs — very fresh, yet still Americanish — and the use of quotes to remind people of their rights on a daily basis.
[...] When the new counterfeit-resistant $100 bill was introduced last week I lamented how ugly our money had become. Today I found even more reason to be discouraged: I see what should have been. [...]
The U.S. Constitution, Art. I Sec. 10 Cl. 1, states, in part:
No State shall … coin Money; emit Bills of Credit; make any Thing but gold and silver Coin a Tender in Payment of Debts; …
Maybe you should’ve put that on there, would have been ironic since these are designs for bills of credit.
@Tony: “No state shall”. The federal government does and can print money, but individual states cannot. That is all it is saying.
They look so minimalist Our currency has already become less ornate and simple looking down the years…this would only complete the process. Bottom lime: It is a nice effort, but sorry…not well suited to our national currency.
These designs make the money look like what it’s actually worth. LOL.
