Leap Before Looking and Gain New Design Skills.

I wanted to just write briefly about the power of leaping before looking and taking on projects before you actually know how to do them. In the last two weeks, simply by saying yes to projects and tasks I would usually shy away from, I’ve learnt that I actually have pretty decent hand-drawn typography skills and I can actually design things I never thought I’d be good at designing before. Something about stretching yourself and immersing yourself in the unfamiliar whilst keeping and open mind and a constant search for solutions causes you to evolve in a way. It’s really exciting to be faced with a seemingly insurmountable task and coming out finding all these new abilities and skills feels like being Peter Petrelli in an episode of Heroes.

I guess what I’m trying to say is, if you’re asked to do something you don’t know how to do, say yes to it anyway and do everything in your power to make that yes really mean yes. You’ll not only have a great time expanding your mind, but you’ll find yourself rewarded with an array of new skills which will drastically increase the range of possibilities to you as a designer whilst strengthening your creative confidence.
